So people have asked me about
sanitation on the AT. One way it has been put is " so do you have to do
your business in the woods?"
The
answer, happily, is that a privy, or long drop as we call them in
Africa, is provided at most shelters. I did not expect that, so such
provision has indeed made this venture easier.
The
attached picture is one Adam made of a privy here in PA. Other people
have named it the "Taj Mahal" and we were told about it ahead of time.
After Adam visited it he came back and said one of my favorite quotes of
the trail thus far. "
That privy is bigger than the apartment I had in S. Korea!"
That privy is bigger than the apartment I had in S. Korea!"
One of the
organizations which utilizes both paid staff and many unpaid volunteers
to maintain the privies and the trails is the PATC "Potomac Appalachian
Trail Club. Our hats are off to them for all of their hard work.
The
AT is said to be one if rhe largest volunteer efforts in the world. I
for one believe it. And they make "doing our business" a lot easier and
safer.
