Section Hiking the AT
Since we started our hike, we have
run into a number of people hiking only a section of the AT.
The last 4 days we
have hiked with two men, Wondering Bill and Mad Dog, who are doing the section
from just north of PA up to Bear Mtn in NY.
They are age 74 and 68 respectively. They did a full through
hike in 2006 and since then meet up once a year and hike a section for 8 days
or so.
This is a new concept
for me and it is one I would like to suggest to all of you who are able. It
would be a grand thing to do with a child or grandchild. It would get them away
from their computer and other electronic gadgets for sure. You could teach them
a lot about the outdoors. Bring books that will help you to key out trees,
flowers and birds.
I would highly
recommend the AT in NJ and NY. North of Delaware Water Gap is some beautiful
territory. The area is full of streams, ponds and many magnificent trees of
many species. There are also bears to see, although we have not yet, as well as
many species of birds.
And if you hike a few
days with some thru hikers, maybe you can encourage them as the 2
aforementioned men have us. Since Bill is 74, I have tried to stay ahead of him
but not always with success. The man is a beast! Mad Dog has regaled us with
stories about his thru hike and we have enjoyed them all. Thru hikers
appreciate the input of different people and it can add solid benefit.
Just saying....
Uncle
