Where Boots Go To Die....
Those of you who have viewed
the pictures of rocks in PA posted by Adam know that we have been hiking
over tons of both big rocks and smaller ankle breakers since entering
PA. The pics help you get a sense of things but you would really have to
do the walk to fully appreciate what is involved.
When
one talks to a local about the rocks, they all automatically give the
same relpy " yep, PA is where boots go to die." It appears to be
something like a state motto. Even the youngest of the scouts we have
met on the AT throw out the quote automatically.
If Pennsylvanians are generally hikers then they must buy more hiking boots per capita than the residents of any other state!
Well,
I fell victim to the dictum and had to buy new shoes in the last town
of PA we passed through. Thank God the outfitting store was in Delaware
Water Gap. I also has to go to a local Wal-Mart and buy an insert which
says it helps with heel muscle related issues. So in one shoe I have a
Super Feet insert and the gel filled insert in the other.
We
walked 15 miles into NJ today and the right foot did feel better. But
breaking in new shoes always leads to blisters so I have a lot of tape
on my feet tonight. Oh yeah, we also passed the 400 mile mark today so
that called for a few seconds of celebration.
So out of PA! Yay! Now let us see about the NJ bears we have been hearing about!
