The ATC Center of Harpers Ferry

The attached photo to this blog shows Adam and I standing in front of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy office located in Harpers Ferry, W VA. It was taken by my friend C.A. Southerland.

Thru hikers who start at Springer Mountain, GA are thrilled to get here because this place is considered the psychological half way point.

Inside the ATC office we registered as thru hikers who will "flip-flop." That means we did not start at either the northern or southern terminus, but some place in between. For us that meant starting at mile marker 903 which is located at Swift Run Gap in northern VA.

After we reach Mt. Kathadin in ME, we will return there and then head south to Springer Mtn in GA. We will not reach our Trek's half way point until we are deep into Maine.

Today as we approached the Pine Grove Furnace State Park, we actually passed the true midway point of the AT. We made a picture of ourselves using Adam's Go Pro camera and will post it soon on FB. The point is marked by a sign board.

By the way, when we registered at the ATC office, we were assigned the numbers 68 and 69. So there are other "flip-floppers" ahead of us.

And you thought a flip flop was just something for feet!
